Stop the presses! A Porsche is being talked about online, and it’s not a 911! The 914 gets a tough break these days. If it’s remembered at all, it’s remembered for its odd looks and not much else, but it deserves so much better. The 914 came about as a joint effort between Volkswagen and Porsche, was lightweight, and packed a 122 ci flat-six. It might not sound like much, but this car was seriously light, weighing just 2000 lbs, making it a nippy little motor. It was the polar opposite of what Detroit was putting out at the time.

Sure, it didn’t have the drag-racing power of a Charger, but it did have a decent enough top speed of 118 mph, and was also cheap, coming in at only $3500 in 1970. Plus, it was of course, balanced. The usual Porsche handling was present and accounted for, making it far better at cornering than its American competitors. It’s got a bit more popular over the years, but it never had the mainstream appeal it needed to survive, especially when the flat-six was phased out in 1972.
