Now we’re cooking with gasoline. The Mazda RX-7, as well as the RX-8, will always have a soft spot in my heart for daring to be so odd. Powered by Wankel rotary engines, which allow small displacement engines to generate good amounts of power, the RX-7 survived for 24 years across numerous generations before getting withdrawn. The tiny base model of the first generation, coming in at just 67 ci, was still able to get the car from 0-60 in 9.2 seconds, they handled extremely well, and looked the part completely.

When it comes to famous Mazdas, it’s absolutely the Miata that takes the prize, but their more expensive, weirder brother is well worth looking at. They’re fast, fun, and curios of a kind of automotive experimenting that isn’t there so much today. While Wankel engines are an absolute bugger to work with, they can produce superb results.
