The Chevrolet C3 Corvette gets a lot of hate online. Some of it is deserved: you don’t have to look far to find people boasting of beating one at a red light in a regular sedan, or attacks against its build quality, or complaints about its lackluster 200 horsepower. All of this does, however, make it a great project car, with nice looks to build on. Its bad reputation, like the Vega’s, means you can pick one up for absolute peanuts – around $5K will net you a decent model. Once you’ve got it, you can go to town on it, and rebuild it into something many thought it could never be: an actually great car.

Replace the terrible engine with a modern LSX 454, to bring horsepower up to a far more respectable 620. Put the panels and interior out of their shoddily-built misery and replace them with custom pieces. Pull out the deeply unpleasant stock transmission, replace it with a T56. Tinker with the gear ratios, and bam, you have a fast, good looking car. If I had the cash and time, I’d also do something about that plasticy-looking rearend, too.
