The Mercury Capri is a beautiful thing. Sold as the Ford Capri in Europe, over there it has gone down as a true classic, that brought power to the everyman. European Capris were equipped with 183 V6s, while in the US, the max displacement was boosted to 305ci, and two more cylinders whacked on. Based on a third-generation Mustang, built on the square-as-a-boxing-ring Fox platform, your mileage may vary considerably on the looks. Get in and drive for a while though, and its heritage will shine through, and likely begin to charm you.

The convertibles are pretty damn rare, but if you’re looking for the standard coupe version, you’re in luck. They’re pretty commonplace, and also pretty cheap — ranging from around $2000. Quite a few of them aren’t in great shape, but that’s what restoration is for. If you’d like a lightweight, fast, fun car as a project, then the Capri may just be the one for you, particularly if you don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty.
