Picture the cover of any ’50s issue of Hot Rod in your head, and you probably see an image of either a T-bucket or a 1949-51 Mercury coupe. It was probably only a matter of days after the first one was wrecked that someone started to hop up the long Coupe. With Lincoln looks, standard Flathead power and reasonable prices, the M-70 series Mercurys might be the most popular modified cars of the decade. Chopped three inches with shaved handles, minimal trim and a pure Green exterior with darker accents by renowned striper and painter Joey Hutson, Mr. Hill acquired the classic Mercury lead sled from Mike Goldman Customs, who had sourced it from a builder in Georgia.

There’s just as much go as there is show, too, with 502 cubic inches of carbureted big-block power in a color-matched engine bay rumbling out of a flamethrower dual exhaust. Details truly make the ride. An understated full Ivory interior with leather bucket seats, console and all-matching trim—including the trunk—faces a smoked digital instrument panel, matching Boys tilt wheel and the Mercury waterfall dash. Power window switches are relocated to the console, and all exterior latches and handles have been shaved.

Meant to be driven, not just admired, it has been built not only with comfort and convenience accessories including air conditioning and a JVC stereo; but power steering and brakes and even halogen headlamps for night use. From the deep-dish polished-aluminum Boyds wheels with Goodyear Eagle performance tires; to the unique interior, it’s a chopped coupe in the classic style created with modern power and convenience.
