This Jeep Forward Control Restomod Is Weird And Endearing

The Jeep Forward Control, produced from ’56-’65, is a really strange truck. Looking more like a petite Unimog than a conventional pickup, only around 30,000 were ever built, but they were capable workhorses. Their strangeness is what endears them to me, so let’s kick that up a notch, and take a look at this Forward Control restomod. This example, the brainchild of head of Jeep design, Mark Allen, uses one of the best Jeep engines ever made. Gone is the original’s four-cylinder Hurricane, in its place sits the legendary four liter, straight six AMC motor.

The original body has also been replaced, this time with that from a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. You don’t need to worry about the truck losing its original off-road soul: the restomod sits on 33-inch T/A KM2 tires, while the front axle is a Dana 44 and the rear a Dana 60. Due to the weight of the engine, a 250 lb counterweight has been installed out back, so as to prevent this thing barelling nose-first down a ravine.

Car and Driver

It’s this thing’s whole look that I love the most though. A truck where it having been shot in its doors a couple of times is an aesthetic plus point, the interior is exactly how you would want a Forward Control to be. There’s a tin cup that’s been bolted to the truck’s frame, and serves as a cup holder. A pack of unfiltered Camels sit in the ashtray. A headliner’s been fitted (there wasn’t one to be found in a stock Forward Control,) but it’s duck hunting themed. Of course it is. There’s even a collection of old parking tickets which came with the truck hanging lazily from the sunvisor. This is a restomod that’s exceptionally sure of itself and the style it’s going for. It’s a salute to the power of independent trucking.
