I have an inkling that pretty much everyone who cares for cars as anything more than a simple A-to-B solution has at some point considered modifying their car. At some point though, real life considerations come into effect: you can’t spend a ton of money on a dream car to modify when you’ve got rent and power due. That’s where this list comes in. For this article, I’ve pulled together 20 of the best cars you can buy to restore and modify without breaking the bank. None of these should cost more than $15000, and that’s for a generally solid model, with many being lower if you’re prepared to put more work in.

Dodge Demon

The Dodge Dart Demon, the coupe version of the humdrum compact that is the Dodge Dart, is a car that is barely talked about these days. That’s a shame for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it’s a sharp-looking coupe that can be had for absolute peanuts. The price for one of these runs as low as $1500, while its engines, the 318 and 340 small-block V8s, have been used in a wide range of cars, making parts easy to find. Some parts you’ll only find stock, due to a larger lack of aftermarket support, but it’s perfect for getting your restoration rocks off.

Another downside is that they can be quite difficult to come by, due to their limited run, but as mentioned earlier, they won’t be costly when you do. Once you get in and start driving, you should have a blast: it revs like crazy and horsepower can be recovered through a bit of tinkering. Well worth buying, if you can get your hands on one.
