20 of the Fastest Muscle Cars Ever Built
1968 Chevrolet Corvette
Quarter Mile Time: 13.30 Seconds
Much like the 1969 Corvette that lead off this article, the ’68 version was just as impressive as the old Sting Ray body was left behind in favor of the newer and more radical “Mako Shark” design based off the concept car. Although the body and the interior were looking shiny and new, Everything else including the chassis, brakes and suspension were basically the same as the 1967. Engine choices were also carried over from 1967 and into ’69.
One of the big differences in the ’68 was that it sat a full two inches lower and seven inches longer than its predecessor. With a sharp Kamm-style rear with a ducktail spoiler, the Vette also had a new cabin. The redesign featured slim-line bucket seats, bigger bolsters and cozy, high seat-backs for more back support. But thats not why people buy Corvettes now is it? Right, they want the muscle!
Corvette had two 327ci engines available for the ’68: the standard – rated at 300 horsepower, with the 350 hp L79 available as an option, or the 427ci big-block as well. Here were some of your choices if you were lucky enough to order one for yourself when they rolled off the production floor:
400 hp L68 equipped with a trio of Holley 2300C 2-barrel carbs.
L36, a 4-barrel, hydraulic-lifter engine rating: 390 hp
L71 that cranked out 435 hp
L88 with lightweight aluminum heads and a cast-iron block
L89 which combined the L88’s cylinder heads with the L71 engine and its 3×2 induction setup.
If you’re a Corvette lover, this one should be near the top of your list if you were into the Mako shark look over the Sting Ray.
