1970 Plymouth Road Runner

Quarter Mile Time: 13.34 Seconds

When the 1970 Road Runner model hit the floors of retailers, customers were greeted by an impressive new front and rear end look. Updates included:

a new hood
grille
front fenders
quarter panels
upgraded Kelsey-Hayes disc brakes
non-functional scoops in the rear quarters.

The Runner came with some crazy colorways like “Vitamin C”, “In-Violet”, and “Moulin Rouge.” The engine remained unchanged, and featured a heavy-duty 3-speed manual as standard. Even though the engine was unchanged, the Road Runner was able to complete the quarter mile run in 13.34 seconds at 107.5 miles per hour.

Even with the new styling and bright colors, sales of the 1970 Road Runner tanked by over 50 percent from the previous year, resulting in 41,000 units moved. The figure was 1,000 ahead of the Pontiac GTO but about 13,000 behind the Chevelle SS-396/454. 1970 was also that last year of manufacturing a convertible Road Runner.
