The 20 Best Hot Rods Of all Time
Jim Lytle’s “Big Al IV”
Base car: Fiat 500 Coupe (If Any)

From one lunatic idea to another, Jim Lytle’s “Allison” projects were ridiculous monsters. Dating back to the 60s, this crazed machine packed four V12 aircraft engines (right?), mounted at angles along the car’s body. The engines were marshaled as much as possible by all-wheel drive, with the driver hemmed in to a cockpit from a Fiat coupe.

Sadly, though perhaps inevitably, the car never ran. The four aircraft engines would have generated 12,000 horsepower, and the custom gearbox and clutches required to use the engines in any form of controlled fashion proved too expensive at $3000. The car does still survive though. It can now be found in Hartford City, Indiana, sadly minus its engines. Its new owner, Mike Guffey, has apparently considered fitting aircraft engines, but says they would once again prove too expensive. Regardless of this, the Big Al IV stands as testament to the intense, crazed drive that powered the original hot rod scene.
